Windows 7 professional xp mode review free. Windows 7 gets virtual 'XP mode'
Since Windows 7 XP Mode is mainly focused on corporate use, it isn't offered readily to users of all distributions. To download, select a different distribution e. Professional from the dropdown menu. Installation isn't too complicated, just read all dialogs and follow the instructions on the screen. Windows XP Mode will install independently for each user, and share many of your hardware components, like hard drive, disk drive, USB sockets, and it'll even redirect your My Documents for optimal integration.
Starting up, Windows 7 XP Mode mostly feels like a regular virtual machine. That becomes an even bigger problem when the changes are essential, such as fixing security flaws or improving general security robustness.
The issue really came to a head with the release of Windows Vista. Vista's compatibility with XP was very good, but it wasn't perfect. Microsoft did a lot of work on Vista to harden it against attacks UAC, of course, but also other things, like prohibiting services from having user interaction , and together these modifications and improvements, along with more mundane stuff like updating the version number that Windows has , have conspired to break some old software.
How much old software is broken is hard to say; programs that play by the rules by honoring the system's security and not making unwarranted assumptions shouldn't break, and most software falls into this category or close enough.
But the fact remains, there are programs that break on Vista, and many of these are critical to corporate users. And because the latest and greatest Windows 7 is based on Windows Vista, it, too, has the same problem.
Windows XP Mode uses virtualization technology to let applications running on a virtualized copy of Windows XP show up in the Windows 7 Start menu and on the Windows 7 desktop.
It has two parts: the virtualization software itself, and a disk image containing a pre-installed, activated, licensed copy of Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 preinstalled, complete with the glorious Internet Explorer 6.
The virtualization software is the latest iteration of Virtual PC. Simply press cancel, as VMware Tools will contain everything we need. You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders. Click there to access a full start menu from XP Mode right in Windows 7. To remove this logo, click VM in the VMware player window, then settings. Click on the Options tab, and choose Unity on the left. Whenever you connect a new device to your computer, VMware will remind you that you can add it to XP Mode.
Click VM, then Settings. Click the Options tab, and then choose Shared Folders on the left. Click Browse, and then select your My Documents folder. Click Ok, and then click Next. You can now close the settings window as well. Now select the folder we shared, Documents, and click Ok. Click Ok in the main properties window. It may offer to copy the files from your old My Documents folder to the new one; choose Yes to make sure you have all of your documents in Windows 7.
You can repeat the same process for any folder you wish, such as your My Pictures and My Music folders. In our tests using VMware worked as good or better as actual XP Mode on a machine that supports hardware virtualization. Windows XP Mode is notable for being faster than many competing virtual machines on the same operating system. It's not quite right to say that Windows XP Mode is featureless, but it is far from fancy.
It is only supported for a handful of operating systems, there is little in-built help, and setting it up can require significant effort by the standards of typical consumers. On the other hand, it is relatively secure, with proper protection for the host operating system, and it is also features a wide variety of hardware compatibility: it's on par with Windows XP itself in terms of usability with different keyboards, mice, printers and other peripherals.
Most notably, it is fast: quite a bit faster in our tests than other VMs. Overall, Windows XP Mode provides a fantastic and fast virtualisation option on compatible machines, with sufficient hardware support to perform most routine virtualisation tasks.
